When a chip can be repaired
Repairing a chip is quicker, cheaper and greener than replacing the whole screen — so it’s always our first choice when it’s safe. A chip can usually be repaired when:
- It’s smaller than a £2 coin
- It’s not directly in front of the driver (outside the driver’s line of sight)
- It hasn’t already cracked out across the glass
- It’s not right on the edge of the windscreen

The most common thing we hear is “it was tiny last week”. A chip the size of a pinhead can run into a foot-long crack from a single pothole or a cold morning. Once it spreads, a quick repair becomes a full windscreen replacement.
Under DVSA MOT rules, damage bigger than 10mm directly in front of the driver — or 40mm anywhere in the wiper-swept area — is an MOT failure. Repairing early keeps you safe, legal and out of a bigger bill.
